Improving Twitter Marketing ROI With Analytics

Twitter ROI Definition

In speaking about how to improve our Twitter marketing ROI, first we must decide what we mean when we say investment and return when we discuss Twitter.

Investment, as Twitter is a free online service, should be defined as the time we spend using Twitter. When possible, a monetary value should be placed on this amount of time, reflecting how much value could be made in spending the time doing other activities.

Return should always be defined as how much bottom line revenue you get from the investment. In the case of Twitter, these bottom line returns will have to be extrapolated from such metrics as increased traffic to site, increased follower base, increased influence base, etc. We must calculate how much revenue is generated by these metrics increasing, and use this in our ROI calculation.

Improving Twitter ROI

Having now defined what we mean by ROI, there are two ways that it can be increased – reducing investment or increasing return. It common terms, what we want to do is increase our Twitter proficiency (using it faster) and quality (getting the most out of our tweets). This post will focus on increasing proficiency.

Increasing proficiency in Twitter can be broken down into two categories: Learning and using the best tools to make Tweeting quick and easy, and finding out how much time is optimal to spend on Twitter.

Learning and Using the Best Tools

First, learning and using the best tools. Although there are many tools and services that exist to help you use Twitter, I have included four here to keep things simple. When used together, these tools are fairly comprehensive in scope and can give you the abilities and information you need to effectively use Twitter. Become acquainted a proficient with these tools to make Twitter quick and easy. We will discuss further how to use the information from these tools for analytics in the next post.

Hootsuite – A browser client that allows you to track all of your Twitter activity. I’ll let you see their site for all the features, but basically this tool is used to actually do your tweeting and track others tweets.

Twitoaster – Use this to see complete conversation threads and get the context of tweets. This tool also has a nice search function so you can look for relevant topics and conversations you might want to participate in.

Klout – See previous post for more details, but this has a nice range of analytics for your tweets.

TweetEffect – Also see previous post, but this is a good tool to see what kind of tweets give positive results and what ones give negative results.

Optimal Time to Spend on Twitter

Secondly, you must find out how much time is optimal for you to spend on Twitter. If you are spending 10 minutes a week, you’re probably not doing enough to generate any kind of revenue. On the flip side, spending hours a day and filling twitter with a surplus of your tweets can also be harmful (not only because you lose time, but because you lose followers).

The best way I have found to do this is to try out different systems. For one month, you can give yourself 10-15 minutes daily to use Twitter, and track your success. Next month, try upping the time to about 30 minutes a day, and compare that to the previous month. Do as many iterations of this as you need to find your optimal time.

Because different business profit in different ways by using Twitter, the only way to get an optimal time is to try it and test it. However, when you look at each month and compare, just remember to keep in mind that there are other factors as well determining your success or failure (such as Tweet quality). The next post will discuss the analytics of discovering tweet quality and comparing month to month success levels.

Anyone have further suggestions on how to optimize your time spent on Twitter?

To Tweet or Not To Tweet, That Is The Question…

Written on April 3, 2010 by

You see it everywhere, “Follow Us On Twitter”.  Does this phenomenon fit your business model or is it simply a fad? That’s the question that many business owners, CEO’s and savvy managers find themselves addressing these days. What is the advantage of using Twitter for your business?

“Isn’t Twitter simply a tool for “the young crowd”? This is a question that’s often asked by business owners, marketing managers and those more familiar with traditional marketing channels.  “I’ve tried it a time or two but it seems to be awkward to use and I simply don’t get it”, a mid-level executive explains. These comments are all too familiar when we asked businesses about their experience with Twitter.

Is Twitter an effective marketing tool for businesses that typically market using traditional means? Let’s take a look at the facts to see if we can get to the bottom of the Twitter question.

  • In February 2010 Twitter reported 1382% growth over the previous year, quite impressive by any standard
  • In February 2009 adults age 35-49 had the largest representation on Twitter, quite a surprising statistic for many businesses that assume Twitter is for kids
  • At the beginning of the year 2009, 750,000 people gained access to Twitter by way of their mobile devices, a clear indication that Twitter has integrated its way into our fast moving, always on the go society.
  • The average Twitter user heads for Twitter at least 14 times during any given month, that’s exposure that clearly demands the attention of most businesses and marketers.
  • The average Twitter user spends approximately 7-8 minutes on the Twitter once they arrive to the site. This is certainly not bad, considering the average web surfer typically remains on a single web page for only a few seconds and at most a minute or two.

For most companies, these statistics are simply to impressive to be ignored.  Setting up shop on Twitter can quickly and easily provide businesses with an additional communication channel to reach their existing customers as well as new prospects. Twitter is no longer a tool for kids, its serious business and businesses are jumping on board quickly once they gain full understanding of the marketing benefits of Tweeting.

5 Twitter Marketing Mistakes To Avoid Like The Plague

Written on April 3, 2010 by

Twitter continues to evolve into a major advertising force for business of all sorts.  Businesses are using tweets to create additional branding for their products and services and communicate with their clients and prospects. The fact that Twitter is a real time medium has truly attracted many firms to the platform and indications are this trend will not dwindle as some initially suggested.

Because Twitter is a social networking medium and not just a distribution channel for promotional copy we have identified a few pitfalls that you may want to avoid if you’re new to Twitter marketing.  Neophyte Twitter marketers fall prey to these simple mistakes that invariably sabotage their marketing efforts and dilute Twitter followers.

1 – Using The Wrong Image On Your Twitter Profile

If you’re trying to create buzz on Twitter and attract people to your offerings the last thing you need is anonymity.  Remember, Twitter is a “social” network; therefore people are attracted to following other “people”.  If you have chosen an image for your Twitter profile that is not consistent with your business, product or service, you have immediately sabotaged your efforts.  Personalize your Twitter profile with an image that is consistent to your marketing campaign. This enhances the value of your brand and attracts others that are interested in your niche.

2- Using A Generic Twitter Page Design For Your Twitter Profile Page

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the default Twitter page designs if you’re going to be Tweeting about what you had for dinner last night or who you happen to think the most popular celebrity happens to be… however, if you’re trying to develop a following for commercial purposes I’m afraid this approach just won’t cut it. Take a look at the most popular profiles… they’re all highly personalized to reflect a specific brand or business niche.

Take your time and make the effort to personalize your Twitter profile. Make sure it is consistent with the message and the theme that you’re trying to convey. You can purchase a customized Twitter profile or have someone actually customize your Twitter profile to reflect the look and feel of your commercial offering.

A generic Twitter profile when used for commercial exposure simply sends the wrong measure.

3- You Constantly Tweet Promotions And Advertisements To Your Followers!

Entering into the Twitter realm is like walking into a convention hall that’s filled with thousands of people, with a multitude of interest.  Some of these people may very well be interested in your offers, but some simply won’t be. Imagine walking into this type of environment, totally new, with no relationship ties established. You then proceed to stand on a table and shout promotional lines and persuasive statements about your offers in hopes to gain recognition and exposure. This strategy probably won’t go over very well.

Think about it, do you enjoy being bombarded with commercial based conversations by friends and associates? Probably not… right?

If you were to walk into that convention hall, stand on a table and begin shouting about your great product, service or offering that’s exactly what you are doing. Unfortunately, this is the default behavior of most Twitter newcomers. This will quickly get you tagged as a Twitter spammer. Avoid this behavior like the plague. Mix up your tweets. Throw in a little humor, a famous quote, a funny video and gently mix in your promotions. Get personal to develop new relationships that allow you to cultivate new prospects. Remember, Twitter is simply an introductory medium. The final objective is to encourage a visit to your web site and ultimately to your opt-in form. Here’s a better approach…

Do your homework… search for Twitter conversations that reflect “mutual interest”, then simply approach a person or two, by contributing to the conversation.  This approach lays the foundation for reciprocal conversation which could lead to new relationships and ultimately more business prospects.

Don’t make the mistake of bombarding the Twitter community with a constant string of promotional Tweets about your products, services or programs. Twitter is first and foremost a “social networking” medium. A place to exchange ideas, exchange conversation and interact with others on subject matter that is of mutual interest. Do yourself a favor and mix up those Tweets instead of deploying a constant string of promotional copy.

Using Twitter Operators for Market Targeting

Using Twitter Operators for Market Targeting

Though Twitter is an excellent tool for targeting specific niches, many businesses have yet to harness the full power of Twitter’s advanced search capabilities. These useful features can fine tune your online marketing efforts and energize your Twitter advertising campaigns.

In fact, one of the most useful features offered by Twitter is the advanced search feature. Understanding Twitter’s advanced search feature can help you “zero in” on specific followers, conversations and topics relevant to your Twitter market segment.

Let’s take a look at a few of the advanced Twitter search operators that can help businesses take full advantage of their Twitter marketing campaigns.

Using the Twitter “Location” Search Filter

By simply using the “near:” operator you can filter tweets that mention specific content relative to your “targeted keyword” and add an identifiable locale indicator. This approach is extremely useful when you want to target Tweeters in specific locations.

For example, I might use a specific location filter to find people mentioning Bowties (a men’s store in Chicago) without finding every mention of the garment that men wear, or other non-relevant results, the filter might look like this:

  • bowties near:Chicago
  • bowties near:Chicago within:20mi

Searching by location can be extremely useful, but it is important to keep in mind that your advanced search will miss specific tweets from people with invalid, bogus or improperly formatted location information. Recently, the location search was almost rendered useless when many users around the world opted to set their Twitter location to Tehran, Iran during the Iranian elections and political unrest. Of course, this totally skewed the effective use of this filter because of invalid location information settings of users. Regardless of the occasional drawbacks and glitches, filtering your Twitter searches by locale can geographically target your Twitter marketing.
